Weekend Wonders: Mallards and the River Cam
This weekend, I had the chance to visit one of England’s most iconic cities: Cambridge. While the magnificent colleges and historic architecture always steal the spotlight, it was the River Cam that truly captured my heart, and, of course, the lively mallards that call it home.
The River Cam winds gracefully through the city, with its calm waters reflecting the centuries-old stone bridges and the lush, green riverbanks. As I strolled along the riverside and watched the famous punts glide by, I couldn’t help but smile at the groups of mallards weaving their way through the water, totally unfazed by the bustling human activity around them.

Punts filled with tourists and students drifted by, some expertly steered, others spinning slowly as first-timers tried to master the pole. Meanwhile, the mallards floated serenely, dabbling near the banks or occasionally following a punt in the hopes of a stray crumb or two.

There’s something so timeless about it, the ancient city, the age-old tradition of punting, and the familiar, comforting sight of mallards making the river their playground.
If you’re ever in Cambridge, take a moment away from the grand buildings and bustling streets. Find a quiet spot by the Cam, watch the mallards paddling along, and enjoy the simple, peaceful rhythm of river life. It’s a moment of calm in a city steeped in history, and for us mallard enthusiasts, an absolute delight.
