6 months of writing about ducks

Six months ago, I started writing weekly about ducks. At the time it felt like a joke – I’d just bought the domain name Mallard Munch in a moment of over-excitement at a chocolate factory event. I had no clear plan, only the vague thought that ducks might be a light, quirky subject to write about.

What I didn’t expect was that ducks would end up taking me everywhere.

  • Into the history of rubber ducks and their unlikely cultural influence
  • To GCSE results season, where I found myself linking ducks with young people’s futures
  • To trips abroad and days at the zoo, where ducks became a way of noticing and reflecting
  • Even to serious conservation questions about the Mersey and its birdlife

Looking back, I realise the blog has become more than a string of posts about ducks. It’s turned into a way of documenting my own life: what I’ve been doing, thinking, and feeling each week. Ducks have become the hook, but really the posts are about connection, curiosity, and finding patterns in everyday life.

I also thought no one would read it. I didn’t care if they did, it was always for me first, but the readership stats have been much higher than I ever expected. That’s been a nice surprise, though I still think I’d keep writing even if no one clicked.

So here I am: six months in, still blogging weekly about ducks. What started as a joke has grown into a practice of noticing, reflecting, and sharing. I don’t know exactly where the next six months will lead, but if ducks can carry me this far, I’m quacky to follow.
